Fire control at its bestFire safety equipment designer and supplier Wormald recently installed its latest and most sophisticated sprinkler system for the country’s biggest dairy giant player – the first in Australasia and sees further opportunities for the energy industry.
The ceiling-only coverage eliminates costly in-rack sprinklers and increases storage array flexibility, says the company. Wormald has also supplying its Inergen gas systems to a number of leading power companies in the North and South Islands for use in their hydro electricity schemes. The Inergen is a gas flooding fire suppression medium used in electrical and switchboard, power applications where the use of water would cause equipment damage or failure. Three naturally occurring inert gases – nitrogen (52 percent), argon (40 percent), and carbon dioxide (eight percent) – can detect and suppress fires in seconds and, because Inergen is stored in a gaseous form, it does not produce a ‘fog’ when released, making it easier for people to quickly locate and use escape routes. Wormald oil industry business development manager Dennis Heath says his company has been working closely with major oil companies, oil refineries and big players in the electricity industry, supplying them with additional hardware, equipment and systems so they comply with the latest safety legislation involved with the storage, transport and handling of flammable gases and liquids. “There are now a wide range of controls and mitigation measures that have to be in place for any given facility that was not previously required under the old Dangerous Goods legislation,” he says.
